I recently wrapped-up making a piece called โ€œManifest Gardenโ€ that featured a poseable wizard art doll as the main character. The fantasy art doll, who I named Manifest Lalora, is crafted in my usual mixed-media process and thereโ€™s a fairly extensive timelapse tutorial if you would like to see how she was made. The Manifest wield the power to shape and manipulate reality in the fantasy world that Iโ€™ve been tinkering away on.

Poseable Wizard Fantasy Art Doll | Timelapse Mixed-Media Art Doll Tutorial

I wanted Manifest Lalora to have an elegant look to her and was in part inspired by Lady Galadriel from โ€œThe Lord of the Ringsโ€. The poseable mixed-media art doll has a head made of Super Sculpey, her body is crafted from aluminum armature, plumberโ€™s epoxy, and upholstery foam, aluminum tubing, paper tape, fabric, acrylic paint, and other materials. I came up with the composition and colors of the piece by doing sketches and a few color studies. I was really happy how the pink, green, red, and purples of โ€œManifest Gardenโ€ came together.

This is a color study for my mixed-media illustration.

I wrote a little vignette about Manifest Lalora:

More than a good many slummers express warm-feelings when the name of Manifest Lalora is brought-up. Even when they voice concerns of the many portents, signs, and augers that point to the foretold Great Unraveling being at hand in a generation or so. During these brief encounters on her way to some grand gala or the gates of her alabaster villa, she merely โ€œtsksโ€ and dismisses such dreadful, such dreary concerns with a well-rehearsed, lilting, โ€œIf we were to cease all of our sustaining endeavors, why that would weaken our great nation, the power of the Sleeping Emperor, and leave so many of our realm without the capacity to take care of themselves and their families. Now most assuredly, you must not want that?โ€

And then she might even fascinate them with some minor feat of magick such as making wisps of light dance about their heads, which often would appease all but the most astute of slummers. Nevermind the fact that the Great Unraveling was foretold as a grand apocalypse that would cease industry, the nation, the Sleeping Emperor, the slummers and their families, and Manifest Lalora for that matter as well.

Prints of โ€œManifest Gardenโ€ are available here:

This is the final art for โ€œManifest Gardenโ€ made with the mixed-media art doll. If you would like a print of this art, you can get one here.

As I get the video edited, Iโ€™ll show some more behind-the-scenes of this poseable art doll piece, but if you want to see more now, I suggest lurking my Instagram or TikTok for more instant gratification. Iโ€™ve footage of making a soothrill, the bug-lizard creature behind Manifest Lalora, and some of the other set-building elements such as the head statues and trees. Once everything is completed it will be on my YouTube channel as a playlist.
